Monitors

Computer monitors come in many sizes but their main purpose is to display the graphics emanating from a computer. What they have in common is the LCD or LED technology that powers them. Monitors are usually presented in a widescreen format and generally vary between 23in and 40in. Resolutions can differ, as well, with 1080p and 4K bookending the popular spectrum. Gaming-focussed monitors tend to have higher refresh rates and adaptive-framerate technology, such as NVIDIA G-Sync or AMD FreeSync, which remove the stuttering and tearing you otherwise see, while professional monitors use high-quality IPS panels for colour accurate viewing. Scan's experts are on hand to guide you through the buying process, so give is a call and we'll find a monitor that fits your needs.

CPU - AMD Desktop

The CPU (Central Processing Unit) or processor, is arguably the most important component in a computer. It's responsible for processing instructions and controlling the other components. Many CPUs include basic on-board graphics too so you can power a display without needing a separate graphics card. AMD's new performance Ryzen processors offer a wide range of models suited to different tasks and budgets. Low-end, dual-core chips can be had for £25 or even less, but are only well-matched to basic tasks, while high-end Ryzen CPUs are multi-core, high-frequency monsters that can tear through the world's most intensive software. Before buying, ensure you've got a compatible motherboard and a cooler that can take the heat.

Motherboards - AMD

The motherboard is the central hub of a PC, the board to which every other main component connects – CPUs in the socket, memory in the DIMM slots, and GPUs, sound cards and other expansion cards in the PCIe slots. Hard drives, SSDs, optical drives and front-panel ports also connect to it. Motherboards have a huge variety of features so research carefully first. You need to make sure your motherboard will fit in your case and that its socket matches your chosen CPU. Current desktop AMD motherboards have six main sockets: AM1, AM3+, FM2, FM2+, AM4 and TR4, depending on the processor used. The latest Ryzen chips use AM4 while the Threadripper performance monster requires a TR4-based motherboard.

Memory - RAM

Random Access Memory (RAM) is where data the CPU is working with is temporarily stored. More RAM is generally better, although there are diminishing returns above 16GB for consumer PC, while 32-bit versions of Windows only support a maximum of 4GB. Speed, measured in MHz, is another consideration, as is latency, but most importantly memory needs to be compatible with your motherboard: it'll either be DDR, DDR2, DDR3 or DDR4, and modern AMD- and Intel-based PCs use DDR4 memory alone. Smaller SODIMM modules for laptops and mini PCs and ECC registered memory for servers are all available in this category.

Power Supplies

The power-supply unit, or PSU, powers all the components inside your PC. The main thing you need to know when shopping is the approximate wattage your system will consume, so roughly tally up the power consumption of your various components. It is recommended to over-spec a little to ensure reliable operation, and get a little extra for future upgrades. Also check that the PSU comes with enough connections for your build, and that it will fit inside your chassis. Modular PSUs allow you to minimise excess cabling by only having the connections you need attached, meaning your PC will not only look more professional but will also run cooler. The quality of a PSU can be indirectly derived by looking at its 80 PLUS rating, which defines its efficiency, with Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Titanium categories indicating ever-increasing power efficiency.

Solid State Drives

Solid-state drives (SSDs) are currently the fastest form of storage available, and can give your system a massive boost in application and OS load times, data-transfer speeds and overall system responsiveness. Their lightning speed comes from using flash memory chips, which unlike traditional hard drives have no moving parts. This makes them more reliable, smaller, lighter and less power hungry, but they can cost significantly more and oftentimes have less capacity. Scan recommends that anyone in the market for a performance PC opts for an SSD.

Cooling - Water

Water-cooling is perfect for those looking to achieve the lowest temperatures and noise levels with overclocked components. Water-cooling loops involve combinations of water blocks, tubing, fittings, radiators, pumps, reservoirs and coolant, and since many of these come in a wide range of colours, it can also be used to create some seriously attractive and jealousy-inducing PCs and case mods. CPUs, GPUs, motherboards and even memory sticks can be water-cooled, but please be aware that the use of this equipment may void the warranty of your system or components.

Other Hose Fittings, & Adapters

These products enable to easily add a fill port to your waterloop loop. When mounted at the highest point of a loop it allows you to easily fill and top-off the fluid, without having to dismantle your PC. Fill ports are not necessary, but make maintaining a watercooled PC much easier than a loop without one.

Hard Drives - Internal

Hard disk drives (HDDs) are used for storing masses of data in your system. They're mechanical, and thus slower than SSDs, but have the benefit of coming in much larger capacities – you can now get 12TB in a single drive. Internal drives come in two main form factors: 3.5in, which you typically use in desktop PCs, and 2.5in, which are usually for laptops, though a range of convertor brackets are also available. Consumer drives typically connect to the system via a SATA cable whereas drives destined for servers sometimes use what is known as a SAS connection.

Keyboards

Keyboards are a vital peripheral for PC users, and regardless of your budget it's important to pick the right one. The most important consideration is what sort of feel you want. For instance, most cheaper keyboards use dome switches mounted on top of a membrane, giving very little tactile feedback. Therefore, touch typists and gamers may want to consider choosing a keyboard with mechanical switches as these provide much greater tactile feedback. Mechanical switches are available in different grades, such as black, brown and blue to name just a few, each with its own set of characteristics. Once you’ve chosen the switch type, Scan offers a wide range of keyboards in a huge variety of colours, styles, including backlit and RGB-illuminated keyboards. Scan further offers specialist keyboards for professional workstations, which are optimised for specific applications.
